The 1997 Central African Conference, a historical crisis committee, will consider the situation in Congo after the overthrow of the Zairian state by Rwandan military forces and Congolese rebels. The actors in this committee will seek to create a development plan for the region, specifically addressing the economic collapse under Mobutu and stimuli for future development, the establishment of national and/or regional political institutions to ensure stability in the Great Lakes region, and the potential role of peacekeepers in Congo-Kinshasa. The Central African Conference will include stakeholders from within Congo as well as diplomats from neighboring countries and Belgium, representatives from international mining corporations in Congo, and officers from United Nations special agencies such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. By including these diverse viewpoints, this committee hopes to work together towards a lasting peace in Congo.
