After the IAEA controversially allowed India to carry out its nuclear initiatives without signing the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the IAEA has a new problem in its hands. As the organization responsible with dealing with policies regarding nonproliferation, disarmament, and the peaceful use of arms, the IAEA must now decide whether it will grant Pakistan the same privilege it granted India. The South Asian state has stubbornly refused to accede to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Pakistan’s position is largely motivated by its relationship with India, and its government has stated that the country will not change its position until India signs the treaty as well. In addition, Pakistan has no clear nuclear doctrine; no one really knows if and when they would use their weapons. It is up to the Board of Governors to decide how it will choose to deal with this unprecedented and potentially deadly situation.
