In the year 1982, the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands led to the dispatch of a British military task-force to the other side of the world, attempting to wrest back control of this tiny archipelago. This also occurred during a time of great struggle for the UK, which had quickly found itself no longer the world’s greatest power, but rather, the “sick man of Europe”, forced to receive IMF funding in 1976. The Cabinet will be convening (under the stern gaze of PM Margaret Thatcher) to discuss how to respond to the invasion and occupation of the islands, while considering the broader Cold War context of the altercation.
